    HYDROSEEDING

Thank you for choosing Bay State Hydroseed to handle your hydroseeding and landscaping needs. We want your new lawn to perform at its very best. For this reason we have prepared an Aftercare Guide below. By adhering to the guidelines we have provided you can be assured that your hydroseeded lawn will perform well and remain attractive for many years to come.

The Benefits of Hydroseeding:

  • It's very economical, costing as little as 1/3rd the price of a sod lawn.

  • Its efficient - We apply a nutrient-rich mix of seeds and wood/cellulose fiber that provide an ideal micro-environment for maximum growth all in one step.

  • You'll get a thicker, more uniform lawn- the result of a mat of interlocking fibers that help create a micro-greenhouse effect.

  • Your lawn will be significantly healthier and last longer because it's grown right at your home on your native soil, not miles away at a turf farm.

  • Hydroseeding is safe and non-toxic to kids, pets and the environment.

Recommended questions to ask before accepting a hydroseeding bid:

  • Make sure the seeding contractor is a reputable established company that can provide you with references.

  • Ask your contractor to bid the job using different grades of seed and hydraulic mulch. The quality of materials used can make a huge difference on the final result of the project, so don't focus only on price.

  • Since hydraulic mulch materials are not all the same, request performance data on material used and options like including tacking agents. (Leading manufacturers and contractors will be more than happy to provide that information upon request)

Caring for your Hydroseeded Lawn

Water

While all aspects of caring for your hydroseeded lawn are important, proper watering is The Most important component of your care program. Given proper amounts of water, your lawn will grow and thrive. If you overwater you may drown your seed (especially in low spots in your lawn) or you may cause seed to be eroded away on slopes. If you underwater you run the risk of depriving your lawn of the water it needs and possibly killing all or part of your turf area.

Newly Hydroseeded lawns may need from one to three (or more) waterings per day. Frequent light waterings are preferable to infrequent heavy soakings. It is extremely important to keep the seed bed moist continually until just before your first mowing. If you allow your lawn to dry out, your seed may die. Causing a thin spotty lawn!

Do not water your lawn to the extent that you have water standing or puddling. In areas where water puddles you may have a lower rate of germination. If water is allowed to stand for long periods there may be little or no germination in those areas.

Mowing

Generally speaking, mowing once per week is sufficient. Always use a mower with a sharp blade. Hydroseeded lawns should be first mowed when the grass blades are an average of 3" tall. This is usually in 21-25 days in warm weather for tall fescue lawns. Kentucky Blue lawns may take a little longer. Fall lawns seeded after October 1 may not grow tall enough to need mowing before Spring. Hydroseeded lawns are likely to show mower tracks after the first few mowings. This is a normal occurrence and is not a cause for concern. As your lawn matures it will look better and thicker after each mowing.

Never mow a saturated lawn. This will help assure that your lawn mower will not become clogged with damp clippings. Make sure that the soil is dry enough to support your lawn mower without leaving ruts in the soil. Also remember that damp clippings are heavy and your lawn mower bag should be emptied frequently.

Remove all clippings each time you mow. Remember to avoid making sharp turns on newly seeded lawns. Sharp turns will result in tender seedlings being torn from their roots. Always keep your mowing height set at 3" and never remove more than 1/3 of the height of your lawn in one mowing.

Note: Do not use mulching mowers until the new lawn has been mowed 4 or 5 times with a conventional mower that will bag the clippings. Mulching mowers are acceptable from that point forward.

Fertilization

Starter Fertilizer is already mixed into the hydroseed slurry that has been sprayed on your yard. You should not apply any additional fertilizer for 5-6 weeks. After that you should contact your nurseryman and have him or her recommend a fertilizer program that is suited for your area and soil conditions.

Always remember to follow the fertilizer manufacturer's guidelines by doing so, you will insure that you are providing your lawn with all the nutrients it needs to grow and stay healthy. Please do not, however, make the mistake of over-fertilizing. Applying too much fertilizer may damage or kill your lawn.

Note: Bay State Hydroseed can take care of your fertilization needs.  We are licensed Pesticide applicators in the State of Massachusetts and we take great pride in our yearly fertilization programs.  Whether it’s a newly installed lawn or an aged lawn in need of some healthy feedings, we can have your lawn looking its very best in a short amount of time.

Weeds

You may have weeds come up right along with your new seedlings. This is because your soil contained viable weed seeds. There are no weed seeds in the hydroseed mix. Please do not panic. Most attractive lawns that you have ever seen (even sod lawns) started out with some weeds. You may begin a weed control program after the 2nd month. Do not apply herbicide before the start of the third mowing. Doing so will set your lawn back significantly. Take a sample of the weed you have to your nurseryman. He can recommend appropriate herbicides. Be sure to tell him that you have a newly seeded lawn. This will affect the choice of control measures.

You may not experience any weed problems whatsoever. but remember, if you do have some weeds with a little patience and effort, you can overcome the vast majority of weeds in a relatively short period of time.

Note: If annual grasses such as crabgrass are a problem in your area it is best to prevent them by using a pre-emergent weed killer. Be sure to follow the directions on the label and do not apply to new lawns.
