The Wong Family Is Back!

Jade (Woo) Wong came to this country in 1921, after marrying Charles Wong.  Together they opened a laundry cleaning service in Fall River.  After a few years, and several children later our grandmother was tired of laundry and talk with her husband about opening a restaurant.  They came to New Bedford and opened "Charlie Wongs," a small family restaurant, and raised their seven children.  People often talk about how they would go in for a chow mien sandwich and orange soda, and then go to the movies all for the low price of 15 cents.

The Cathay Temple was opened on April 10th 1951 by our grandmother Jade Wong.  Unfortunately, our grandfather at this time was bed ridden with a stroke, but they managed to wheel him in for the opening, he died soon after.  Jade ran the restaurant with the help of her family.  In 1983, our grandmother passed away, but she left her legacy to children.  Her eldest son Dennis was a chef in the kitchen along with her son-in-law Phillip, her youngest son Steven managed the front along with his sister Sue.  They were able to keep the restaurant running for another 17 years, but on September 3, 2000, they finally closed the doors.

Five years later, on September 7th the doors were opened again by the next generation, the granddaughters.  Lisa and Jade, daughters of Dennis and Ann Wong, decided to carry on their grandmothers dream of a family oriented restaurant where people could come together and enjoy each other.

We would like to thank everyone who has come to the restaurant, and everyone who is still to come.  Our special thanks and deepest appreciation goes to our kitchen staff, who are all the original cooks.  Dennis, Phillip, Frances, and Edmund.  Our uncle Steve and aunt Peggy for the front of the house support and advice.  We would also like to thank our loyal customers who rode the waves along with us in the beginning, always offering the support and insight (free advice).

Enjoy dining at the Cathay Temple.
